‘Alternative’ interventions don’t always get the scientific examination that they may deserve.

Practitioners are generally biased towards improving existing techniques rather than taking a risk on a brand new technique.

So while aromatherapy is dismissed by many a new product has shown some great promise:

Since odours have a direct impact on behaviour and mood, they may be used to reduce biological stress

This new study examined if a new odour inhaler called the AromaStick® could relieve stress and provide and health improvements:

The AromaStick® is specifically designed to transport essential oil molecules to the olfactory system

The research team conducted several different experiments that included laboratory style experiments as well as more real life style.

The results from the experiments were very positive:

Not only did the inhalers outperform established relaxation methods, but the relaxing effects also showed in all measured parameters and in the intended direction

The differences shown by the results was clinically significant.

Psychologically, odour inhalers uplifted mood and well-being. Moreover, both the inhaler’s practicability and readiness may render it an effective tool for stress management.

While it may be difficult to validate the AromaStick® for use in everyday life (manufactured, experimental stress will never match real life stress) these results nonetheless provide evidence of a strong biological link that is worth considering in more depth.
