What is Inositol?

Inositol is actually a carbohydrate. It is found naturally in a range of foodstuffs such as brown rice, red meat, some fruits and wholegrains.

Your body also naturally produces a certain amount of this substance, as it used for cell formation, transportation of fats and nerve transmission. It is therefore a key part of a healthy, balanced diet.

It also has strong links to helping to relieve feelings of long-term anxiety, worry and stress. This is because Inositol can have a positive effect on the levels of Serotonin found within your body.

Serotonin is a chemical that is produced by the nerve cells in your body. It serves many functions, including within your digestive system. But this chemical can be of interest to anxiety sufferers for a function it performs within the brain.

Serotonin is considered to be a natural mood stabilizer. It is believed that it works in the brain to help to regulate moods and, importantly, to control anxiety.

As we mentioned up top, a certain level of anxiety is fine – it is a normal biological response to external stimulus. Your body is set up to control this response, and one of the keys to this control is Serotonin.

Studies into people suffering from anxiety have often showed that they have lower than average Serotonin levels in their bodies. This suggests that for whatever reason, their bodies are struggling to produce enough of the chemical, and in turn it is not able to perform it’s functions – including regulating anxiety.

Inositol however has been shown to boost the production of Serotonin. Therefore by raising it’s levels in your brain, it is able to resume its job of regulating anxiety – and hopefully reducing the various symptoms you may be feeling of your excessive anxiety.

In addition to general anxiety, studies have also shown that Inositol can be effective in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and also in relieving episodes of panic attacks.

What is the Best Way to Take Inositol?

As we discussed above, whilst Inositol is found naturally in a range of foodstuffs, it is not found in sufficient concentrations to positively affect the production levels of Serotonin.

Therefore, if you are looking to take advantage of the natural anxiety relieving properties of this product, it is a good idea to look to supplement products.

Inositol is mainly found for sale as a food supplement in capsule and powder forms. Broadly speaking they are all as effective as each other so it will depend on how you intend to consume it.

Capsules are of course going to be more convenient to consume, whereas as powders have the benefits of being able to blend into other foods – like a fruit smoothie – to make it more palatable.

What is a Typical Inositol Dosage for Anxiety?

A number of studies have been performed into the effectiveness of Inositol at various dosages.

Generally speaking, the recommended dosage for anxiety sufferers is between 12 and 18 grams per day.

When taken within this range side effects are very rare, generally limited to temporary dizziness & headaches. If you find that you suffer from either, simply lower the dose until the side effects are no longer present.

Studies have been performed where up to 18 times the recommended dose has been given to patients with no serious side effects reported.

Consult your physician before taking any new medications, including Inositol. They should be able to suggest an appropriate dosage level.

As we discussed above, Inositol is widely available in both capsule and powder forms.

Here we’ll review some of the most popular brands across both forms.

Inositol Powder Product Reviews

BulkSupplements Pure Inositol (Vitamin B8) Powder

This is a straight up, no fuss way to easily incorporate Inositol into your diet. First thing to note is that this is a pure powder, with no fillers or preservatives or bulking agents.

You are buying nothing but pure Inositol here, so whilst the price may be a little higher than some other products you know that you are going to get your money’s worth.

The powder itself has a somewhat sweet taste, and it very easily dissolves in liquids, making it an easy product to work into your diet – literally measure out your portion into a glass, add water and stir.

Pure product and easy to use makes this a winner. Buy in bulk for greater savings, with the 1 kilogram pouch working out a considerable saving over the 250 gram.

Another excellent powder form of Inositol, however it loses half a star because whilst it does claim to be pure (and I have no reason to doubt it), this product does not come with the guarantee of being lab tested for verification of this claim, as did the product above.

That being said, there are a couple of key advantages to this product that are well worth noting. For one thing, it is a vegan product, a claim that was not made with the above powder. In addition, the manufactures have told me that the source, whilst not certified organic is from non – GMO plants.

So if knowing that that source of Inositol is pure and as good as possible is important to you, as it is for me, then this is good news.

It dissolved fine in water as I would expect, with the usual slightly sweet taste. Packaging is a simple silver pouch which resealed fine after every opening, so I expect it will do a good job of preserving the product until it’s all gone.

It’s also quite cheap, especially with bulk savings. If you buy a Kilo at a time, you’re going to save quite a few dollars in the long run compared to some other powders out there.

First thing to note is that the products is exceptionally pure. It is made from Non-GMO corn, from which the Inositol is derived. It is however lab tested for purity after manufacture as well as in the USA.

This means that what you pay for is what you are going to get – however, here is where, for me anyway, this product lost a star. It is very expensive, almost twice the price of a lot of the Inositol powders found online.

So whilst you do get the peace of mind of a lab tested, premium product here you are going to have to pay extra for that I’m afraid.

Taste was identical to all Inositol powders, i.e. quite sweet, and it dissolved easily. It’s just that high price tag that put me off a little.

Inositol Capsules Product Reviews

EZ Melts Inositol, 500 mg

'Melts' don't always have the reputation when it comes to taste, but it's quite the opposite with these ones. They have been described as 'like candy' on several occasions.

Another good things is that these capsules are designed to be dissolved in the mouth rather than swallowed – hence why it’s important that they taste good! The benefit here is that by dissolving, the chemical is more easily absorbed once you swallow it.

It also means that if you have any problems with swallowing large pills or capsules that is not an issue with this product.

Downsides? Whilst boasting a wide variety of useful claims – dairy free, gluten free, sugar free, etc there are no claims as to the purity of the Inositol contained in each one. In fact, as we know from the powders above, pure Inositol does not taste of cherry, so there is obviously something else in there just to create the flavor. So if purity is important to you that could be something to bear in mind.

The dosage is also quite low at 500mg per capsule. You’ll be sucking away on quite a few to get to your dosage if you’re aiming for 12 to 18 grams of Inositol – and I can testify that the flavor, whilst nice to start with, can lose it’s appeal somewhat on the 10th capsule.

These would be great to carry for when you’re out and about however, perhaps to give you a quick jolt of Inositol if you feel a panic attack or a bout of anxiety coming on.

NOW Inositol Capsules 500mg

This product is something of a budget range compared to the capsules above however in my opinion they are certainly not the worse for this.

For one thing, they are flavor and odorless and you simply swallow them down. They are nice and smooth so easy to swallow so you don’t necessarily need to drink water with them to help get them down, though it certainly won’t do any harm.

Products wise, there are no claims to purity nor to being sugar free, dairy free etc – though I’d be surprised if too many nasties are in there. If you do have a very sensitive stomach maybe try phasing these capsules into your diet slowly – I didn’t have any problems however.

They are very cheap for the amount you get which is a definite positive. Again however, the dosage is quite low so bear in mind that you may have to take quite a few per day though you can of course space them out.

Being tasteless they are easy to pop down a few with every meal during the day to reach the appropriate dosage level however.
