CBD Oil for Anxiety: Plus Discover The Best Alternatives
You probably know a little bit about marijuana. If you do, you may know things like it gives you a ‘high’, you can smoke it rolled up in a joint or bake it into a brownie, and after using it you may get the ‘munchies’. You have probably seen or at least heard of Cheech and Chong and Harold and Kumar get the Munchies.
However, you may not know some other things. Marijuana is made up of two main molecules. One is called cannabidiol, or CBD, and the other is named tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. The THC is the part that gets you ‘high’.
However, CBD is not psychotropic, but researchers and consumers have long claimed that it has massive potential health benefits of a range of different kinds: it prevents muscle tension, can help treat the nausea that is often a product of chemotherapy, and is can slow the progression of Multiple Sclerosis.
Even more amazingly, there is quite a history of using CBD to treat epilepsy in children, with some children going from having tens of seizures a day to having none at all due to being treated with CBD.
However, we are going to focus on the benefits of using CBD oil for treating anxiety, which is something that is becoming much more popular, and is starting to pique the interest of researchers and academics.

A Brief Background of CBD Oil
Of course, it goes without saying that those who in general consume marijuana want the ‘high’ that we previously mentioned. Thus, the industry has generally sought to produce marijuana with high concentrations of THC in order to provide the highest high.
Until recently, that is. There has been much more research into the therapeutic effects of CBD in that last few years, and more and more individual consumers are becoming interested in the product, believing it can be safely and effectively integrated into their lifestyle.
CBD oil is mostly produced using the Hemp plant. Due to the aforementioned quest for the highest high, most cannabis plants have very low levels of CBD. This is not the case with hemp, as it is the least processed form of cannabis, so CBD oil is mostly produced using this plant.
The concentration of the active ingredient cannabidiol varies enormously between different products, which is something you should be aware of. Bear in mind also that CBD oil will mostly contain little if any THC, so it will be non-psychoactive and will not have any of the potential negative effects of tetrahydrocannabinol.
What is the Evidence for CBD Oil?
Much research that has been conducted on the efficacy of marijuana for treating anxiety has not isolated CBD. In this area, research is in its infancy. However, Medical News Today outlines the research that has been conducted thus far, and results are promising to say the least.
One of the things that is so appealing to consumers about CBD oil, and perhaps to a certain extent marijuana, is its purity: it is a natural product, and many claim that is has no or negligible side effects because of this. In contemporary society, with its obsession with smoothies, plant-based diets, yoga and the gym, this seemingly miraculous plant (one can’t deny some of the research and testimony) is bound to be a hit.
- One 2010 study found lower levels of social anxiety and greater resilience after using CBD.
- A study published in 2011 found that CBD could reduce social anxiety related to public speaking.
- A meta-analysis found that CBD could treat various forms of anxiety: PTSD, OCD and panic disorder.
One of the worries in the popular imagination with consuming marijuana is the risk of it exacerbating or causing anxiety problems, which means it may sound strange to suggest that a product made from cannabis can alleviate mental health problems.
However, that this can be true is down to the fact that THC CAN cause anxiety, whilst CBD can also alleviate it. A study published in Neurotherapeutics suggests that CBD can help to reduce anxiety, and may also provide relief from;
- General anxiety disorder
- Panic disorder
- Social anxiety
Likewise, whilst prescription medication for anxiety and other mental health problems often comes with side-effects that can be severe, the consensus seems to suggest that CBD is very unlikely to cause side effects.
The National Institute of Health also cites a number of studies that show positive results in using CBD to treat anxiety. What is even more incredible, and important for those who are suffering from anxiety as well as any other condition, particularly those that are neurological in nature, is that CBD apparently actually improves your brain power, or in more scientific terminology it acts as a neuroprotectant (it protects your brain) and facilitates neurogenesis (in other words it allows neurons to develop in your brain).
This means that as well as alleviating your condition, CBD may actually improve brain health more generally. One case study, though not related to anxiety, illustrates the power of cannabidiol.
The below Ted Talk by Josh Stanley, the founder of a charity trying to build awareness, outlines the amazing story of a young girl with epilepsy who was having hundreds of seizures a day.
At one point, she was even expected to not make it through, such was the severity of her condition. After she was given medical marijuana, her condition improved to such an extent that she was having only one seizure, and sometimes no seizures, in a day.
As well as this, the CBD was improving her cognition daily, illustrating the neuroprotective nature of cannabidiol. The same miraculous benefits were seen in other case studies cited by Mr Stanley.
However, we must be balanced, and outline some of the potential negative effects. Though the consensus seems to be that CBD is safe and has few side effects, some potential effects include:
- Some drug interactions
- Lower blood pressure
Of course, marijuana has other side effects. For example, you may be worried about the supposed link between marijuana and psychosis. However, to the best of our knowledge and the research available, these sorts of effects are caused by the THC in cannabis rather than the CBD, and thus you need not worry about this.
Where & How to Buy CBD Oil?
Obviously, due to the fact that marijuana is a drug, and that CBD is a component of that drug, getting some CBD oil could be difficult if in your state marijuana has not been legalized. Even if you live in a state where it is legal, it may not be a case of merely popping down to your local mall.
If you are in doubt about the legality or marijuana or CBD, consult your state’s laws, which vary widely. Some states, such as Massachusetts, allow people to carry and use small amount of marijuana without a prescription, and in these states you should be able to access CBD oil from a doctor or over the internet.
Likewise, if you need a prescription to use marijuana, then anxiety should qualify you for a doctor’s note in states such as Florida, which will allow you to obtain some CBD. Marijuana is only illegal in all cases in 6 states, so if you live in one of these you are unfortunately out of luck.
However, this is slightly complicated by the confusing nature of the regulations, and the fact that to some extent they are inconsistent. As well as this, in most states where is it legal to carry and consume marijuana, actually being able to legally buy it is more difficult, with legislation regarding purchasing marijuana not as far along as legislation permitting its use.
Another thing that possibly makes the issues baffling is the fact that hemp oil and CBD oil are often confused, though they are not the same thing.
What are the Alternatives to CBD Oil?
As we said previously, CBD oil should not be confused with hemp oil. Hemp oil is made from hemp seeds, and it contains very low levels of CBD, perhaps only 1 part per million. CBD oil, however, is manufactured to contain high levels of CBD, 150,000 parts per million.
Think of one as a food (like olive oil), and the other as a medicine. However, due to misunderstandings and perhaps, let’s be honest, unscrupulous marketing, people do get these two very different products confused.
Though hemp oil is perhaps not as potent, it is a superfood that contains high level of protein, omega fatty acids, vitamin E, and it is also a powerful anti-oxidant. What’s more it has a nice nutty flavor. If you are unable to source any CBD oil, you may want to try hemp oil. So what do consumers say about hemp oil?
Hemp Oil-Cannabis Oil, 100% Pure Hemp Oil, Pure Therapeutic Grade (8 Ounce)
Consumer testimony for this 8 ounce hemp oil is fantastic, with a vast proportion of users giving the product a 5* review. Positives of this product identified include:
- Helps ease pain
- Helps you get a restful sleep
- Eases the symptom of neuropathy
One user simply said that it is a ‘miracle’, claim that her mother uses the oil. She suffered from a huge amount of pain after back surgery, and was in agony. That was until she started using CBD oil. After a couple of weeks, she was swimming, exercising and was back to her old self.
Others have thought, on the other hand, that;
- Doesn't help with sleep
- Doesn’t contain CBD
- Doesn’t have any positive effects
As we have pointed out, this product should not be confused with CBD oil, and some users appear to have done this, mentioning the fact that they feel no effect, or that the oil contains no CBD. However, if you are aware of this fact, then this product may be perfect for you, as it has excellent consumer testimony, and many who will swear to its efficacy.
Restore PURE6 Hemp Oil Extract 1800 mg Advanced Formula 1 ounce (30ml) Restorative Botanicals
On the premium end of the scale this help oil supplement has some very positive reviews that cite such benefits as:
- Eases pain
- Will help you to sleep
- Helps to manage your mood
- May help to ease the symptoms of debilitating diseases such as Lupus
One reviewer cited the case of their husband. They suffer from chronic pain and this helped them no end, easing his pain and allowing him to get some sleep. They also claim that they have tried other products , and this one is the best, which may help a little to justify the price.
Others have claimed a negative experience, saying;
- It is prohibitively expensive
- The effects weren’t as profound as expected
- Doesn’t contain CBD (this is a recurring theme)
In terms of the expense, one reviewer pointed out the fact that the manufacturers recommend 15 drops a day, which is a huge amount, given the cost of the 30ml bottle. In general, users are very positive about this product. However, you have to be sure, given the price.
Nutiva Organic Cold-Pressed Unrefined Hemp Oil, 24 Ounce
This extremely popular oil is produced by a recognized manufacturer, and is 100% raw organic hemp oil.
Again, and this is a common theme with hemp products, consumer testimony is very positive. One plus point of this product is that it offers great value. Other advantages, according to consumers, are;
- Relieves pain
- Clears the complexion
- Can even help with dogs’ illnesses (one used for hip dysplasia in their Labrador)
- Helps with hair growth
One reviewer said that they had tried a number of products, including prescription painkillers. They failed to have an impact, and thus they started to read about CBD oil. They found the expense of this could not be justified, and so they resorted to hemp oil, with amazing results.
They said that the impact upon their chronic pain was almost instantaneous, with no need for a pain med the same evening. Within days pains that had plagued her for years started to disappear, and she found herself looking and feeling younger. Needless to say, she gave the product a 5* review.
One of the few negatives that has been mentioned is the taste isn't for everyone.
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Oil, 60 Softgel Capsules (Pack of 3)
Unlike the other products, this is in capsule form, which is a convenient way to supplement on the run.
It must be said that in common with the other supplements we have reviewed this has a loyal fanbase, who claim benefits such as;
- Improves stiffness and fatigue
- Relieves pain
- Will help you to manage anxiety and stress
- Increases energy
One man said that his wife had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2000, and that it had been progressing since. However, after they had begun using hemp oil their symptoms improved to such an extent that their hands were as ‘steady as a surgeons’. They even went as far as to thank God for the impact.
Others beg to differ, saying;
- Doesn’t meet the standards set by other products of this type
- That it didn’t work
For example, one user claimed that, though it didn’t work in the way they hoped it would (i.e. relieve pain), it actually made them feel a little ‘high’ and out of sorts.
As we have said, CBD oil and hemp oil are NOT the same thing. However, consumer testimony is so strong that there are compelling reasons to try hemp oil, particularly if you cannot get CBD oil in your area, or if you want to add something to your general health regimen.
To CBD or Not to CBD?
As an intelligent person, you are probably dubious about the claims made in this article, and by the research cited above. You are right to be. Conspiracy theorists and, let’s be honest, those who just want to get stoned, have long been in thrall to the benefits of marijuana and CBD more specifically.
However, the evidence so far is very compelling, and though more research is needed, it has to be said that if CBD has even half of the effects that are claimed then it is surely worth a try.
Yes, some are prone to be hyper-evangelical about CBD and its positive effects: it will cure X, Y and Z disease, and will even cure cancer, if only the government will stop keeping the secret from us, some say. This may be overstating it, of course.
However, one must admit that the evidence for the efficacy of CBD is strong, and some of the case studies that have been cited have been nothing short of miraculous. As well as this, most commentators state that CBD oil has no, or at least negligible, side effects. Why wouldn’t you try it, if that were true?
